Beliau berkata kementerian menjangkakan pemberhentian pekerja berterusan sehingga 2017.

– The Malaysian Insider

Malaysians are involved in the oil and gas sector needs to find new jobs because there is not much the government can do to assist in global economic conditions affected by the fall in oil prices. - AFP

Retrenchment in Malaysia may continue until 2017, said a Cabinet minister today, adding that Malaysians are worried of losing their jobs because of the gloomy economic climate need to find work in other fields.

Expect a severe retrenchment in the oil and gas industry over the coming months, Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Richard Riot said Malaysians in the sector has to find new jobs.

This is because, he said, there is not much the government can do to assist them in global economic conditions affected by the fall in oil prices.

"(Retrenchments) will overflow (of the oil and gas industry) to other industries such as banking," he told reporters in Kuching today after handing over power to the president of the Industrial Court of Malaysia.

"The government can not force employers to hire workers if they have no money to pay salaries.

"Like it or not, they should be dismissed. Try to find a job elsewhere, "he said when asked about the government's contingency plans to deal with the possibility of layoffs in the oil and gas sector.

He said the ministry expects the layoffs to continue until 2017.

The Malaysian Insider recently reported that about 20,000 people lost their jobs last year, and many more are expected to be dismissed this year, according to the Malaysian Employers Federation.

Riot comment on reports of the national oil company Petronas is considering layoffs of 51,000 employees as part of an option in the face of lower oil prices.

The firm was hit by the fall in oil prices, which fell to their lowest level since 2003 on Monday.

Prices fell more than 70% in the last 18 months as exporters around the world produce more than one million barrels of crude oil per day, exceeding demand.

The Edge Weekly has reported that Shell Malaysia will reduce 1,300 workers in the next two years, adding that it was expected due to falling oil prices.

Riot today refer to in order to do two jobs to support life, as well as the recommendations of the Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry Datuk Ahmad Maslan before, which was criticized by many.

"Some people say, with the cost of living so high, look for a second job.

"Seeking first job was difficult, let alone to find jobs for-2," said Riot, but not the name Ahmad.

Proposed Ahmad, who has his own Twitter hastag # 2kerja, is already a reality for many Malaysians working class who said, working the 2nd is a need to support their families. - The Malaysian Insider
